Rustic Performance: Cedar is the natural choice because of its beauty, practicality and durability. The Rustic Natural Cedar Company uses only the finest cedar to create furniture that lasts for generations. It is naturally resistant to decay, insect and weather damage. Because of this superior resistance, cedar is frequently used for outdoor fencing, and siding on homes. Cedar has an exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio, which means that it is both durable and easy to move about. It does not shrink or wrap as many other woods commonly do. Unlike pressure-treated wood furniture, The Rustic Natural Cedar Company uses no chemical preservatives that may be harmful to your family’s health. The Rustic Natural Cedar Company uses two types of cedar – Northern White Cedar for the indoor and outdoor furniture for its creamy white color and enduring strength, and Western Red Cedar for the outdoor garden products such as arbors and trellises. When left untreated, over time white cedar weathers gracefully to a silvery gray, or it can be stained to match any décor. All cedars log furniture is subject to the natural process of checking as wood “seasons”. Checking occurs as wood releases moisture across or through the annual growth rings and it does not affect the structural performance or integrity of the wood.

Rustic Leadership: For over 30 years, The Rustic Natural Cedar Company has been manufacturing quality cedar products for the home and garden. Our broad variety of products includes bedroom sets, tables and seating group, gliders, rockers, swings, arbors and other garden products. These fine furnishings are handcrafted with care in Quebec and British Columbia and shipped worldwide for your enjoyment. Our brand is our promise. Look for the “Cedar Looks” logo on Northern White Cedar log furniture. This brand recognizes the superior quality and strength of natural cedar. Nothing equals the sturdy construction and sanded finish of the “Cedar Looks” furniture collection. Long-lasting good looks and low maintenance make cedar the natural choice for your home and garden décor. With the added benefits of beauty and comfort, cedar is an ideal choice for any setting.

Few Known Facts About Cedar
As being referred to by the Aborigines as the tree of life, the cedar tree is apart of the Pine family. These trees grow rather slowly to heights of about 40 feet tall and their width may get as wide as 15 feet. They are native in the mountainous areas of Africa and Asia and can be found naturally in North America. Cedar is highly resistant to weathering, and will last many decades outdoors without being susceptible to rotting and decay. Cedar can be left unfinished and untreated. The natural weathering process will transform this beautiful wood into a pleasant gray color. To maintain the original rich color of the wood, it is necessary to us a protective coating.

Eastern Red- This tree produces an aromatic red colored wood that is used in construction, and furniture industries. These beautiful trees can reach a height of nearly 100 feet tall. Instead of having one main trunk, the cedar can have branches that split off. It also has leaves that can be very deep dark green, or extremely light green.

Northern White- A medium-sized evergreen tree with scale-like leaves in flattened "sprays" that typically are aligned vertically. Wood is soft, light-colored, durable and aromatic. The first tree exported from North America to Europe. Tolerates moderately well drained soil; thrives in marshy, (moist) loam and full sun. Cedar swamps provide good winter habitat and food for deer. Its mature height is around 70 feet tall. Seed Source: New Hampshire.

The common white cedar of the North is a native of moist situations in the mountains of Virginia. It is planted extensively as an ornamental tree. In its northern habitat it reaches a height of 70 feet and a diameter of 3 to 4 feet. The trunk is often twisted, and frequently divided into two or more erect stems. The branches are short and horizontal. Trees sometimes form almost impenetrable thickets, as the dead branch-Cs are very stiff. In the open it develops a conical, symmetrical crown.

The wood is light, soft, brittle, coarse-grained, durable, fragrant, pale brown. It is used in the northern states for fence posts, railroad ties and shingles. There are numerous ornamental or garden varieties of the arborvitae. One closely related to it is the Oriental arborvitae; also extensively planted for ornamental purposes.

The leaves are scale-like, 1/8 of an inch long and are so arranged as to make the small branches flat. They have an aromatic odor when crushed and a pleasant taste.

A Word about Northern White Pine The white Pine in this furniture was harvested in Northern Ontario. Pine must have a protective finish applied, if left unfinished it will discolor and crack as it dries. Some surface checking may occur due to changing moisture levels but this is typical for a natural product and will not affect the durability.

Finishing White Pine For the best finishing results use a good quality exterior stain or paint. You should follow all the manufacturer’s directions, including an initial light sanding with 120 grit sandpaper.
We do not recommend using straight spar varnish or varathane-they may look great initially but will weather very quickly and require frequent re-coating. Stains like “Sikken’s Cetol 1” provide excellent and long lasting protection.
It’s a good idea to consult your local paint or stain retailer for advice on the best finish for your geographic location and usage.
