Few Known Facts About Cedar
As being referred to by the Aborigines as the tree of life, the cedar tree is apart of the Pine family. These trees grow rather slowly to heights of about 40 feet tall and their width may get as wide as 15 feet. They are native in the mountainous areas of Africa and Asia and can be found naturally in North America. Cedar is highly resistant to weathering, and will last many decades outdoors without being susceptible to rotting and decay. Cedar can be left unfinished and untreated. The natural weathering process will transform this beautiful wood into a pleasant gray color. To maintain the original rich color of the wood, it is necessary to us a protective coating.

Eastern Red- This tree produces an aromatic red colored wood that is used in construction, and furniture industries. These beautiful trees can reach a height of nearly 100 feet tall. Instead of having one main trunk, the cedar can have branches that split off. It also has leaves that can be very deep dark green, or extremely light green.

Northern White- A medium-sized evergreen tree with scale-like leaves in flattened "sprays" that typically are aligned vertically. Wood is soft, light-colored, durable and aromatic. The first tree exported from North America to Europe. Tolerates moderately well drained soil; thrives in marshy, (moist) loam and full sun. Cedar swamps provide good winter habitat and food for deer. Its mature height is around 70 feet tall. Seed Source: New Hampshire.

The common white cedar of the North is a native of moist situations in the mountains of Virginia. It is planted extensively as an ornamental tree. In its northern habitat it reaches a height of 70 feet and a diameter of 3 to 4 feet. The trunk is often twisted, and frequently divided into two or more erect stems. The branches are short and horizontal. Trees sometimes form almost impenetrable thickets, as the dead branch-Cs are very stiff. In the open it develops a conical, symmetrical crown.

The wood is light, soft, brittle, coarse-grained, durable, fragrant, pale brown. It is used in the northern states for fence posts, railroad ties and shingles. There are numerous ornamental or garden varieties of the arborvitae. One closely related to it is the Oriental arborvitae; also extensively planted for ornamental purposes.

The leaves are scale-like, 1/8 of an inch long and are so arranged as to make the small branches flat. They have an aromatic odor when crushed and a pleasant taste.

The bark is gray to reddish-brown, separating off in long narrow, shredded strips.

The fruit is a small, oblong cone about ½ inch long with 6 to 12 scales.
